I dont know if anyone has noticed this at all, I mean in European/American (or whatever) culture we have got to be all macho and stuff, because so many people are homophobic and stuff, but I noticed that in Japan there is none of that stereotype. I mean you see guys hanging off other guys and pretening to, well, backdoor each other on trains and just really weird stuff for guys to do. These koukousei arnt gay, its just they dont seem very homophobic at all. They would offer to show us down their pants and ask to see what we have got etc. I know the culture if very different, and that traditionally samurai were 'free' with their sexuality, but has anyone else noticed this? And what are your thoughts? not wanting to offend, just wanting opinions. cheers.

hi, im a japanese guy.
well, i think it's true japanese guys dont care about their appearance to be macho but they do like girls, you gotta believe me. and backdoor each other? well, i dont think so...
hmm... let me put in this way...
i think the way of communication is pretty different than that of yours(westerners or other nations)
That's why you sometimes find hard to understand japanese culture. Sorry for my English language skill, i cant explain enough.

Behaviour pattern differs in different culture. In Asia it is not unusual to see men slinging an arm or two over another in public (not holding hands mind you) - they are very straight i assure you. This practice would be misunderstood among westerners whom i feel raised the "macho-thing" into a pop-culture; hence those who do not fit their definition would be 'effeminate' or less manly.

You know since I was raised in the US I've always had a feeling of not fitting in completely with my highschool friends in Japan. Not always but on occasion. And like you said, one of those occasions was with their openess about sexuality.

Like for example, I DON'T want to take my clothes off in front of people just because I get drunk. But my highschool friends will get butt naked when they get drunk and swing their shlongs without a care in the world. (Of course this is only in front of other close highschool friends not the general public).
And grabbing each others privates are at times considered a joke. Now, I laugh and think it's hilarious when they do it, BUT I don't want guys (even if I've known them since childhood) getting near my nuts or even regarding my nuts with interest.

I'm sure the whole issue with public bath houses is one of the reasons why, to children, the naked human body becomes such a close object of interest.
I also think the culture of Japanese wanting to be the same or similar with the others fuels that interest to address the sexual issues to make sure they're not all too different from the other guys. I also think as a teenager sex is the most common and interesting topic that they all have and they want to talk or acknowledge it one way or the other but they can't do it with a straight face so they make it into a joke.

My opinion but I have no idea.
You know this is a very interesting question.
I've just realized that THIS was one of the biggest reasons for me not feeling completely comfortable with my friends.
I feel enlightened...

I lived in South Korea and noticed that the males were openly affectionate with each other. Weird for me.

I've noticed it. It's a breath of fresh air to me--of course I am female and I can sympathize with a foreign guy's squeemishness. At the company where I worked there were these two guys--once our boss was talking to us and guy #1 was standing next to the boss' desk, leaning on it w one hand. Guy #2 was behind #1, looking over #1's shoulder at our boss, resting his chin on the shoulder of guy #1!! I thought, Wow, you'd never see that in America in a million years!! (and this was at work) And there are many more examples.
To me it seems like guys are very unininhibited w other guys; girls are relatively uninhibited w other girls. But put guys and girls together and then everybody gets uptight.

Yea. Hongkongnese and Taiwanese have already found that point in Japan culture already. Maybe Singaporian girls too.
From Korean's book or article, they don't seem they are noticing it or it maybe different from their feeling in the life, crap macho-thing is still necessary for them? .
