Eclipse, netbeans or oracle's JDeveloper are very good free IDE.

Eclipse is good for raw java.

In case of J2ee application you can go for JDeveloper or netbeans. As in eclipse you might have to search for plugins.

Also JDK 7 is not yet released and the latest stable version is JDK or Java 5. JDK 6 or Java 6 is due in a month and can expect in very soon.
Don't use JDK 7 as it is in pre mature stage and most of the IDE might not support it.

Try Eclispse.
This is a free source and you can get from the net.

it has a lot of cool features.it really makes you code with ease.
and with added functionalities like configuring server, databases its woderful.

Mainly java has importance on packages.
normal procedure for creating packages and running them involves a lot of tasks.
but in eclipse you can do that in a fly.

You can just view the option and most of them are self explanatory.

try netbean from java. download it at: sun.java.com. Or try eclipse from eclipse foundation, download it at: eclipse.org.
in my expirience if you want to develop a GUI try netBean, the new GUI editor is excelent! but eclipse run faster and use less RAM when loaded.

Eclipse is the best IDE I ever used.. you can download it from www.eclipse.org.

If you need another one that is lighter than Eclipse, you can use JCreator... download it from www.jcreator.com
