What makes it different to that of other investment banks? I read all over their website that it is different, but it is not clear to me how and why this is the case.

Most investment banks get most of their revenue from equities and M&A. Barclays Capital gets most of its revenue from bonds and company debt. I believe they don't even have an equities team.

They would tell you there are differences in their hiring policies too. Bob Diamond (the CEO) claims they don't offer guaranteed bonuses and Managing Director titles to attract staff. Most investment banks offer titles and guaranteed bonuses to attract the staff they want and it is one of the reasons they don't make any profits.
