According to the popular myth of the day, black cats were seen a "familiar" (personal spirit) to a witch.
Black cats were of course hunted down just as the Wren ( a small European bird associated with the Druids) is still hunted down to this day in some places.
As in all things religious, anything seen by one side as good is considered to be bad by those opposed to it. Black cats were thought to be good luck until the early Christian Church went on one of its numerous rampages.

People are superstitious about black cats for one of 2 reasons I know of: They are said to be a witch's familiar; or because they're black and cats have a history of having supernatural powers.
