Mainly it's the first finger on his left hand..he's done it practically since birth, but obviously didn't do too much damage before he got teeth, but now it always looks quite red and sore,.. can anyone suggest anything to get him to stop, or anything to help protect the area?

This is normal - your baby is teething or hungry, most likely teething. Get him a toy to chew on. Don't use watered down vinegar or lemon juice - this is all good if the baby puts the fingers in the mouth, but when he gets tired and starts rubbing his eyes with it, he'll be screaming the house down!!!

My son did this as well my grandmother told me to dip his fingers in watered down vinegar(you should have seen his face the first time he tasted it!!lemon juice is another one.I know you can buy things that taste horrible to stop you biting youre nails but i think it,s too strong for a baby.If he is teething frozen fruit on a stick is good bit messy when it started to melt but my son loved it(healthy too)good luck

when my son started sucking hes thumb he was also biting and leaving it red and then it looked like a wort but wasn't so i try-ed a mitten , a ban-aid and amborsol for teething around he finger and i made sure it wasn't the good flavored kind and then he stopped.

I'm sure he has teething toys but kids do crazy things. good luck!

Your baby is teething. Get a teething ring for them, there are some great ones on the market that can be put in the fridge.

I sucked my thumb when i was young, it got red but wasnt sore, i would just let your son chew his finger, as my mum tried for years to get me to stop, Didn't work!

I know you can buy stuff that just tastes nasty that prevents you from chewing your nails. Or offer other appealing choices, like an apple slice wrapped in a washcloth, so it tastes good, but he can't get a chunk to choke on.

you could maybe try putting a glove on the hand that he chews. that will help protect it and it probably wont taste so nice in his mouth!
if it is really bad take him to a doctor. maybe they could suggest something to use that would put him off chewing it.

If you go to a pharmacy they have some stuff to put on their fingers that taste bad. It is suppose to break them from sucking their thumb you might try it.
