Hello - I too hold a degree in History; I graduated last May. If you are looking for a job in the field of history, you have a couple of options.

1) contact local/state historical societies, museums, or archives. You will begin at an entry level position, but there is a good chance that they will pay for you to continue your education if you continue to work with them and pursue a graduate degree.

2) The government hires a lot of history majors because of our experience with research and writing. The National Park Service is a division of the Federal Gov. and hire a LOT of history majors; I would definately check with them. The opportunity for advancement in the NPS is good, especially if you stick with them and get a graduate degree.

3) Most counties have a historic preservation division. If you call your county government they can direct you.

4) Have you considered a graduate degree? Masters or Doctoral? A graduate degree in history will get you a lot further in the job market than just a Bachelor's. The field of "Public History" (museum, archival, historic preservation) is a rapidly growing field and can be a lot of fun because you get to work with history more tangibly.

A minimum of a Master's degree will make you a more attractive hire in whatever area you choose to work. Also, with a Masters, you will be able to teach in the local school system or at a community college.

GOOD LUCK!

The Federal Government has several types of jobs that require a degree in history. I went to USAJOBS and found eight jobs in the Federal Government that are available today.
