Watergate was the term used for the case against former President Nixon. It was about the espionage committed against the other party while Nixon was US President whom he tried to cover-up. When the case was blown out, he was forced to file his resignation to avoid impeachment.

Watergate refers to illegal actions and the cover up perpetrated by the White house during the Nixon administration. During the 1972 Presidential Campaign the White house employed a group known as the Plumbers led by G. Gordon Liddy. Their initial job was to find and stop the source of leaks regarding the administration. Notable actions committed by this group were a break in at the office of Daniel Ellsbergs' psychiatrist and a break in at the DNC headquarters located in the Watergate office building. Thus the name Watergate. The Plumbers were caught during this break in. The scandal was expanded when Nixon tried to obstruct justice by withholding tapes made of Oval Office Conversations, firing the Special Prosecutor and finally the discovery that a significant portion of one the relevant tapes had been erased. Nixon resigned to avoid full impeachment by Congress. This is just a brief overview of events if you want to know more there is a wealth of information available and it is a fascinating look at an extreme abuse of Presidential power.

Tricky Dick Nixon was a dirty politician (and a Republican! Who knew?). During a re-election bid, he conspired with his inner circle to rig the election, and one of the things they did was to break into the offices of the Democratic National Committed and wiretap the telephones. the DNC offices were in the Watergate Hotel in downtown DC. The plot was discovered, and then Tricky Dick began a coverup of the affair, including payoffs and lying to congress. Impeachment was looming, and Tricky Dick knew he would lose, so he stepped down.

Nixon was nuts, he could not lose to McGovern but his paranoia drove him to allow crimes to be committed, then the cover up blew up.
