Where I live "chicken snake" refers to black rat snakes and also yellow rat snakes due to their habit of hanging around barns and chicken houses, where they forage for mice and eggs. These snakes are not poisonous and are fairly harmless, although a large one can deliver a pretty nasty bite if wrangled the wrong way. The bite is no more than a small laceration, though, don't treat it any differently.

"chicken snakes" are rat snakes. The most a bite could do is bleed a little. They're harmless. They also only bite if grabbed or provoked.
