Adonis was Venus' son and when he died, her mother ran up to him to save his life, but didn't manage to arrive in time.
In her race she ran close to roses shrubs whose thorns made her bleed, making the roses red

Shakespeare has written lovely poetry about the love between Venus & Adonis, Venus Roman Goddess of love, falls in love with a mortal, Adonis.
Their love affairs is very passionate through the writtings of Shakespeare, if you desire to read more of some of it, I would probably, type in a search, "Venus and Adonis."
