Leopards
Leopards can be found in India, Africa, Siberia, Korea, and China. They live in mountains, savannahs, forests, jungles, and even on the outskirts of urban regions. Leopards live by themselves and are defensive, and often urinate around the boundaries of their territory to warn intruders to stay out. Their fur is consists of black dots filled in with a lighter orange or tan color. Some leopards are totally black and are known as panthers. Leopards weigh 66 to 200 pounds. Because leopards can live just about anywhere, they have a large variety of prey. Some of the most common are gazelles, antelopes, monkeys, jackals, impala, insects, rodents, hares, peacocks, snakes, sheep, and goats. Leopards can live on food alone for long periods of time and re-hydrate with liquid from their prey. Often, leopards will take their kill up into a tall tree so other animals such as lions and hyenas, cannot steal it from them. Leopards can live up to 15 years in the wild.
Jaguars
Jaguars live alone and are found in the southwestern USA, northwestern Mexico, South America, and Central America. The most common living grounds for jaguars is the rainforest of the Amazon Basin. Jaguars are the largest cats in the Americas. Their heads and bodies are large and stocky and their tails are shorter than that of a cheetah or leopard. The fur of a jaguar is made up of large, irregular shaped black rings with markings in the middle. Jaguars weigh between 92 and 200 pounds. They have a large menu of prey including, cows, deer, reptiles, fish, and monkeys. In the wild, jaguars can live up to 12 years.
Cheetahs
Cheetahs are found in the savannah and vegetation zones, south of the Sahara in Africa. Their fur is made up of black spots, evenly placed over their entire body. Cheetahs are tall, slender cats and weigh anywhere from 80-95 pounds. Their legs are long and muscular, and are adapted for speed. They are the fastest animals on earth, reaching speeds of up to 60 mph.
Big cats are found all over the world. Although many of them have similar physical characteristics, they are very different from each other. There are 36 species of wild cats in the world
Lions
In Africa, lions are found only in reserves and national parks located south of the Sahara. Lions vary in color ranging from white to brown to orange. Females can weigh anywhere between 265 and 330 pounds. The “king of beasts” or the males lion, can weigh between 330 and 500 pounds. Male lions that have reached maturity have thick, bushy manes on their neck and shoulders. This solid fur helps protect them when fighting with other males. It also indicates the difference between genders. Lions trap their prey by a surprise attack, or ambush. They hunt on mainly medium to large sized animals including, antelope, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, and deer. Lions live in groups called prides. Each pride consists of only relatives made up of up to 12 females with cubs, and 6 males. In the wild, lions can live up to 16 years.
Tigers
The tiger is the largest of all cats. They can weigh up to 620 pounds! They can be found in India, Siberia, and South East Asia. They are easily recognized with their large black stripes on top of a tan-orange coat. Their faces, necks, and stomachs have stripes of white as well. Tigers are usually found in the forest although they like grassland and swamps as well. They mainly feed on large animals such as deer, buffalo, and wild pigs. Sometimes they will eat fish, monkeys, birds, reptiles and even baby elephants. On occasion, tigers will kill other tigers, leopards, and bears. Sadly, tigers are very popular to hunt by humans. Three of the eight known tiger subspecies have become extinct. In the past, tigers have been accused of being man-eaters. In reality, it is the old or injured tigers that are the offenders and do so because they can no longer successfully hunt their normal prey. Tigers can live up to 10 years in the wild and up to 26 years in captivity
