Punk came out of the pub-rock scene in England, which produced a variety of bands, like Dr Feelgood, Brinsley Schwarz, Frankie Miller, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, and The Clash.
Best bet is trying ALLMUSIC.COM They give you the whole breakdown band by band, year by year, and decade by decade. It's the most comprehensive site on any kind of music, and was set up by long time music journalists/critics.

I think the best punk website is allpunk.net as it offers band and album information, videos, current news updates and you can stream punk rock of many different genres there.
