The Nile River has two major branches. The main branch is called the White Nile. It has its farthest reaches in the 16,000 foot peaks of the Ruwenzori Mountains on the Zaire-Uganda border; then it flows through Lake Victoria and north through Uganda, the Sudan and Egypt.
In Sudan, the White Nile is joined by the Blue Nile, which is the second major branch in length, but possibly first in the amount of water it contributes. The Blue Nile starts in the highlands of Ethiopia around Lake Tana, and flows in a gentle curve through Ethiopia before crossing the Sudan to join the White Nile.

White Nile and Blue Nile come together to form the Nile. This happens before Egypt. Get an atlas and have a look.

The River Nile has two origins the main one comes a long way from Many coutries south of Sudan so it arrives in Khartoum the capital city of Sudan all tired and slowed down in terms of strength of its current that is the White nile.
That same spot meets the nile comming from Ethiopia with a very strong and fresh current and its very fast and that is the Blue nile.
The name is mainly due to the strengthe of teh current.
I was one day staying at the Sheraton Khartoum and my room had a great view of that exact meeting point of both niles and its really a worderfull sight.
Its as if two people meeting, one is old and slow and calm and the other is just exploding with energy and power.
Hope that sheds some light on that matter.

The Nile River is the longest river in the world, stretching for 4,187 miles. The Nile flows from south to north and is formed by three major tributaries: the White Nile, the Blue Nile and the Atbara.
The Blue Nile has its source in the highlands of the African country of Ethiopia, by Lake Tana. The runoff from spring rain and melting snow caused the annual summer flood of the Nile that the Egyptians depended on for water to irrigate their crops, and deposit fertile top soil.
Just north of Khartoum the combined White and Blue Nile meet their final major tributary, the Atbara which also has its source in the Ethiopian highlands.

As that dude said: The blue nile and the white nile are major tributaries. They are the origions of the Nile where the water comes from. The two of them merge at a point to constitute the river nile
The river nile, or Nahr El Neel as we call it , is different from the blue nile and the white nile and it is never to be mixed with them.
