There are a number of ways, each more subversive and sinister than the other. I will be detailing a few of these here. But the usual disclaimer first:
Disclaimer:
----------------
I am NOT responsible for the content of any of these sites. I am not responsible if any of these sites get you into any trouble with any authority, be it your Lab in-charge, the Comp Sci. dept, the Principal, the CBI, FBI, CIA, NSA or any other Intergalactic authority. You agree to take full responsibility for your actions.
There. Now, on to more important things...
Method 1: Bitty Browser
-------------------------------
1. Get yourself an account on a popular Web Desktop site
--> e.g. Google Personalized page, Netvibes, Pageflakes, etc. (Links in the Sources).
2. Open the Bitty Browser page. Navigate down to the 2nd section "Service Specific Bitty Browsers" and click the link/button titled "any website URL"
For the dodos, here's a direct link:
http://www.bitty.com/widgets/?ctor=website
3. In the page that opens, type the Orkut address. (orkut.com, duh!) The next page will open the Orkut page in a a Bitty Browser.
4. On the left there is a list of Web Desktop services to choose from. If you have signed up at one of the services (like I mentioned above) click the corresponding link/button.
Voila! You are ready to go.
For best results, put it under a second tab (Simply create a new tab and drag and drop the Bitty module onto the new tab)
Pros:
--------
1. It looks like you're on Netvibes. Orkut opens inside the Biity browser inside Netvibes. Completely Stealth. :D
2. You can scrap, read, submit messages all from inside the Bitty Browser!
Cons:
--------
1. Authentication works with the local Google cookie.
In dumb-speak, this means: When you login from the Bitty browser the first time, the site redirects to the main Orkut page. A trick is to stop just short of when Orkut begins loading.
NOTE: I personally prefer Netvibes for their superior quality and relatively fast loading. Plus, the graphics are clean, too...
Method 2: Proxy sites
-----------------------------
There are a lot of anonymizing sites available on the web. A few have been mentioned in the other answers, but none so comprehensive as this list:
http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Proxying_and_Filtering/Hosted_Proxy_Services/Free/Proxy_Lists/
And there's a search engine that searches for anonymous proxy servers!
http://lhproxy-swicki.eurekster.com/anonymous+proxy+server/
There are other ways too but I guess I'd better write a blog post on this one... :D
Hope that helps.
Cheers!

your college proxy server will typically not block https connections. so go to https://www.orkut.com and login. As soon as it logs in, you might see a 'Page blocked' message. Just add an 's' to 'http' in the address bar of the browser each time that happens and hit 'Go'.
