The Supreme Court is the last bastion of democracy. It defends what is in the Constitution by applying it in the trial of cases. It protects the right of the people and the government.

The United States of America is not a democracy, it is a Constitutional Republic. You have a written Constitution and I am sure it makes provision for an independent judiciary, a free press and freedom of speech.
The best way for you to find an answer to your question is to visit the Library of Congress on line and click through until you find what you're looking for.
A Supreme Court (The High Court in England) is not of itself a threat to democracy nor is it a threat.

Tough question!
I suppose it depends on your political point of view; if you supported the civil rights movement in the 1960's it was a defender, however if you supported Al Gore in the 2000 Presidential election, it was a threat as it stopped every vote being counted.
The fundamental problem is that the current President has made a deliberate effort, with his appointments of John Roberts and Samuel Alito to the Court, to shift it significantly to the right of the political spectrum, where many achievements - civil rights, abortion, gun control to name but three, will be under threat for a generation.

Its job is to shape how the Constitution is interpreted. By doing that, it establishes the framework and mindset by which America's law will be applied.
Since its rooted in the Constitution's role as the supreme law of the land, its defending the nation's structural values. Those who oppose the way the Court interprets the Constitution, however, will decry it.

It really does depend on who is President, and as they are mostly elevated by the President, though this will be roundly denied, it then depends of the latitude they are given by said Pres.
With the current Pres, many of thr Judges are ar se lickers, keeping their well paid jobs by turning a blind eye to the murderous activities of Bushwhacker and his awful crew.

personally I would have to say threat because they are appointees and have far to much real power and leeway to ignore what the Constitution really says and dictate what they want it to say ( maybe we should take a hint from Frank Herbert his character Jorge X McKie never heard of those books check them out a bureau of sabotage sounds pretty good to me and I volunteer )
