The player should know the reason, but if asked the referee can tell him or her. I always give a one to three word answer about what they are being booked for. For example, dissent, violent conduct, serious foul play. I do not explain the laws to them. That is the trainers or coaches job. I will however give brief explanations to the captain if asked. Brief and to the point, getting the game started as quickly as possible to avoid any more trouble.

yes ! he is not obliged to volunteer the information but if questioned must tell the captain. but in this situation they normally tell you anyway, also the opposition need to know the offence whether its direct or indirect.
