It's the birthday of St. Nicholaas or, as we call him in Holland, Sinterklaas. And we celebrated it yesterday by giving gifts accompanied by little poems. Santa Claus is a rip off of Sinterklaas and widely promoted by coca cola.

No. I have fun iciness Solstice in my coronary heart, and in my very own domicile. yet each 3 hundred and sixty 5 days, I nevertheless bypass to my dad and mom domicile, and characteristic Christmas eve dinner, and yuletide dinner. different than the prayer my family could or won't say (they only quite pray whilst my Nana is around), which I tactfully and respectfully exclude myself from, there is relatively no longer something quite Christian approximately their celebrations. My family's Christmas is quite often approximately family traditions (classic Polish nutrition for Christmas eve dinner, me and my sister's custom of putting up my mom's tree), and the pagan factors of the holiday (ie, present giving, a tree, a dinner party) in any case. If I refused to attend my family's Christmas, i does no longer evaluate myself an somewhat sturdy person, or an somewhat sturdy pagan. it might harm my family previous words if I refused to have fun our family bonds, and our family traditions, for some thing as paltry as faith. No, i'm no longer down in the dumps approximately Christmas being extra remarkable, as a results of fact quite some the spectacle is pagan in any case, and that which isn't does not remember as a results of fact iciness Solstice to me is extra approximately taking area in my family than rejecting Christianity.

I live in the U.S. and when I first moved to a pre-dominantly German section of PA with my now-ex husband, they celebrated something called Bellsnickle Day. You put your shoes out on the night of Dec 5 and on the 6th, Bellsnickle would put a small present in them. I had never heard of it but we started doing that and my kids are now in their 20's and still ask if they should set their shoes out on the night before Bellsnickle Day.
