just remove the cd rom drive and replace it with a cd writer. you would be better off installing a dvd writer.

Install the CD-RW in an Open Bay. Then get an IDE cable with a Master/Slave , make the CD-RW slave, set jumpers, if you know how to,accordingly. Or buy the unit nad have a tech install it.
Its just like adding a Hard Drive, cause thats what it is, a Removable Media Device, a Hard Drive is a Media Device.

Take out the cd-rom and replace it with the cd burner. That seems logical to me, given that a burner can also function as a cd-rom.

If you have an available drive bay in the front of your computer and a free port on one of your IDE cables you can add it, otherwise you can just replace the old cd-rom with the burner. Just check the back of them to make sure the jumpers are set the same. (slave, master, cable select)

If you add it, just set the drive to master if you connect it to the end of the cable, slave, if the middle of the cable, or cable select if you don't want to mess with it.

A CDROM in no way can interfere with a writer, there is no special treatment you have to give.
