There are so many reasons behind this----why the society act so.
1/First of all --we have to remember that if two are really in love so strongly then they will marry despite of the socitys verdict. As they cant think of even remain apart for a while. In this case why socity even bow down its head????So there should be strength to the commitment they like to get.No half hearted--no fear--no hide and seek--just open to the society.
2/The love should be with out any condition----that should be un --conditional.
3/They should keep their love for ever to keep an pure image of true love. After few time if they will forget their love and do any thing to show the society that they failed. That does not mean they will act falls. They have greater responsibities to the society. They have to keep in their mind.
4/The selfish people sometimes act bad to harrash the lovers--so that they will part from each other and will go for marriage according to their choice. But they are very few.
5/Socity is made up of we.So we have to change for the betterment and for the betterment of ones need and peace of mind.

I think its none of the above. In the old days, people used to think of marriages as alliances. A prince and princess from different kingdoms used to get married and form an alliance of both the kingdoms.
Same thing for the poor people also.
Now, we are following the same system. But, we don't need to.
We are blindly following a tradition that doesn't need to be followed anymore.Does it make sense to marry a man or woman of your parents choice?
Also, if you have noticed you are related to all the people in your caste or religion in some form or the other. Some distant cousin or aunt. You never know.
On the other hand, love marriages also have a few drawbacks. You never know whether you are really in love or if it is just infatuation. You have to be sure that you are really, really in love before you decide to marry someone.
I hope this answer helps you. :)

racism,,casteism,or mere selfishness ?
Not anyone of these - it is only bcoz of ego.
You would have heard people saying "love marriage does not have the support of parents".
Who is responsible for this situation? I feel it is the parents.
When you say that you are loving a boy/girl and want to marry him/her. What will your parents say?
Either they will oppose or agree with a condition, "We will not interfere if there is any problem in the future".
Wheras if it is a arranged marriage they will do everything to make it a happy life. Why can't they do the same thing in case of love marriage?
Ego is the only reason.

Because the period of life for love is the most important segment for intensive studies in schools and colleges and hard work for consolidating roots for your future.
Now a days, people do not care for race and caste... and question does not arise about selfishness... who has time for worrying for others... whether he is making or spoiling his life...
We should wait patiently for a right time for marriage and love...
