Because people have sex out side of marriage. That has become the norm so the sanctity of marriage has been violated and the age of "sophistication" has come with the mutiple sex partner and "moving in" and "try before you buy" and even then noone wants to comitt. The relationship is all about sex. In fact it's not a relationship at all. They grow tired of each other, move out and move on. People become the value of scott paper towels. Use em then throw them away.

It's usually the woman wanting to leave over some BS thing or because of kids. The guys usually want to stick it out, but the divorce laws are slanted against us, so you can't stop them, and it's much much easier to get divorced than it is to get married. What's funny is that the abusive and unloving couples are the ones that stay together the longest, while the ones that try to do the right thing and be loving and supportive get divorced.

I think it's evolution. We don't burn witches for their land anymore either. I am married, but I am so because I want to be, but I don't need to be.
People are getting more aware and tuned in to reality (although it's hard to believe if you watch the daily news) and people are figuring out that they can find happiness in more than one person. If my backspace worked, I would revise and say that they find more happiness in more people, and it makes sense to me.
People often settle for the best mate they think they can get; partly due to tradition and what we were told growing. The other part is people are insecure, so they need to trap a mate to feel a sense of worth in themselves.
The new generation has figured out that different people bring out different things in them, and they have different things to share with multiple people.

Some people don't want to have to spend all that money on one day, then have to pay more to divorce... So lots of people just live together...
