Dogs barked then as they do now, humans we think could grunt and scream and even whistle, they made noises which they later turned into meaning-full sounds, Man has never needed language to control dogs, they are easily controlled by sign language. It is nonsense to say they stimulated speech in humans, they have different vocal cords and are incapable of speech, as we know it. Dogs have long been thought to communicate with each other by mental telepathy and to `read` their human masters mind. Had they wished for early man to speak, it would not have been with a voice. I do know of this theory, but it dosen`t work.

i cant think of a logical explaination for that, i was under the impession that man developed coherant speech as a method of communicating complex ideas, starting with where the best fruit was, then to what type of predator was coming (advantageous because if you knew it was a lion type animal you shouldn't climb a tree etc), then passing stories and knowlage down the generations. finally we could talk about endless rubbish - and we now have found that we dont need verbal communication, we just text or email people on the other side of the room lol

Dogs had a relationship with mankind for 175 000 yrs, but earnest for 10 000yrs. But as for speech I don`t know, however, dog + man communicated by gesture (I think). + by shouting in an intelligible sound, to command the wolves/dogs.
