what would be the ideal weapon then?

Biological weapons. Plenty of answers being sought to eliminate illnesses/diseases that are causing millions of death every year, e.g. AIDS.

Would we really need to think of an 'ideal weapon', when enough damage is already being caused to human kind (diseases, wars, environmental issues) ?

All this on assumption that you are actually asking how we could ''physically'' hurt human beings. Hurt / pain, can be caused emotionally too. And I am sure you know about that.

Biological weapons, DNA mutations, Cancer, and Absence of any of the basic elements for survival as in Oxygen, water and food.
