How much money say, per day, should a person have if they're planning a trip to the US, hitting places like San Francisco, New York etc? Lonely Planet recommends US$50 per day if you're staying in decent motels, eating out etc. Sound right?

If you are traveling alone, you are going to need at least 4 times that amount per day ... $200+ USD. If you are traveling with a friend, or a group of four (yourself and 3 friends), then your costs will be less.

If you are traveling in a group of four, and share a room together everywhere you go, then you can divide the room costs four ways, and you can probably get by on $100 a day each.

Do some online research for the costs of rooms, avg cost per night of a room for one person in a clean decent motel is going to run $65-$100 depending on location. Meals, figure $6-$15 each at a family style restaurant, depending on the meal. Tours will run $50 on up, and are well worth it in New York and San Francisco. Be aware that the US is a huge country, and it is 3,000 miles between NYC and SF! Therefore, you will also have to figure in travel costs.

Sometimes you can get a good travel deal through a travel agency, with discounts on motels, car rentals, attraction tickets.

You should be able to find a lot of information online to make plans with a bit of work.

You can see the sights for cheap if you plan well otherwise $50 is not going to get you very far.
Research Motels and Hostels in the areas you want to visit. Hostels are your cheapest option (www.hostellinginternational.org) make sure they are in a safe area, see if there are reviews on them. Ask them about trips- sometimes they will run city tours or nights out for residents etc. plus you can meet lots of other folks there who are also travelling on limited funds who will be willing to share valuable tips with you!
Also, if they have kitchens- eat in every now and again, this will save you some money.
Good Luck
PS: Make sure your copy of Lonelyplanet is up to date, maybe ten years ago $50 would have been adequate.

$50 a day?!?! In New York, you would last about an hour with just $50.

However, it all depends on where you plan to visit. The US is an expensive, inflated place. It's better if you have friends to stay with. Then it might be free!

Practically? A trip like that sounds pricey. Going from one end of the country to the other, sleeping in hotels and visiting landmarks... That's gonna cost over $10,000, easily.
