The microwaves need somewhere to go...if nothing absorbs the energy, it will go back into the thingy that makes the energy...can't remember the proper name of it, and fry it.

In the worst case, you could end up damaging the magnetron. You are sending what is usually hundreds of watts (or more) into the cavity which normally reflects the energy into the food. This is not good, it's not that you will for sure fry internal components, but why take the risk?
With the cost of repairs, it'd probably be easier to just buy a new one if you do try this little experiment out with any frequency.

Well my microwave can run when it's empty.. so maybe it's just the type of microwave you have?

Unless it is a conventional microwave oven. then maybe you can heat up the oven w/o anything in it.
