There are various proprietary products on the market called Label Remover, Label Off, etc.. Just spray on, leave a short while, and then label and its adhesive is removable. Trichloroethane used to be an ideal solvent for that purpose, but sadly it has been banned in the UK (harmful to the environment) though may be available still in other countries (particularly USA where there is no concern over the effect of emissions on our climate).

Meths or cellulose thinners used to be the favourites but lately some labels are held on with hot-melt glue that is a real pain. Very hot water and suds may remove this but I have given up on some of the jars.

White spirit or Nail Varnish takes it off. I've used these methods many times and the labels come off leaving the jar spotless.

If you use only soap it will leave the jar sticky. As I'm sure you know.
