The blank bit on the left hand side of a page? It's the margin.
You usually have a smaller one on the right, and one at the top and bottom too.

Could be called "The left side" !! Its not margin, thats a part of the left side cut off by a line - and to all these pillocks who think its ok to slag off the question master with a silly comment.
