Get a dog from a pound!!!! They are free and they need a good home and love. They are great pets --- every pet I have had, I got from the pound or took from someone who didn't want him/her. Furthermore --- in general, pets from pounds can actually be *healthier* as they do not suffer from the inbreeding that "store" pets do. Look at it this way --- you'll have a new lovable pet, you'll save a life and $2,000!
I woudn't really recommend a hamster --- they cannot love anywhere near as deeply as cats and dogs do -- their limbic system (the part in charge of emotions) is much less developed than that of dogs and cats. Next - you can't interact as directly as you do with dogs or cats --- you will be keeping him in a cage and taking him out now and then to pet.

First of all when you do get the dog be EXTREMELY careful that you do not get one that came from a puppy farm. I am not an animal rights activist, but I do care about animals and many of the expensive dogs come from puppy farms where adult dogs are basically reproduced to death. The breading females are almost always pregnant and it takes an extreme toll on the female dogs. Often they are bred in such a way to almost insure that the pups will have genetic diseases. And the small overcrowded cages they have are almost never clean, in fact they get nasty enough to make you wonder if they have ever been clean. Decent breeders do exist they are just hard to find. Unless you are wanting a show dog the SPCA is often a better choice health wise because they only allow the most healthy dogs to get adopted and they are much cheaper, you can probably afford one right now.
As for hamsters make sure there cage is away from any room you need allot of quite in like a bedroom. they need to chew allot, and they seem to love chewing on plastic. If they have the right item to chew on they can get really noisy.
Also they have an unfortunate tendency to eat the babies, When I had hamsters I tried everything to get them to stop and nothing seemed to work. If the sight of something like this would ruin your whole day (it did mine) never have both sexes of hamster at the same time.

Hamsters are cute and cuddly, but they are nocturnal. They will run in their little wheels at night, and they sleep during the day. They do need to be changed daily, or they smell. Pine shavings are best, or some type of deodorizing hamster litter, to keep the smell down. They will eat just about anything that we eat, and they pack it into their jaws, which is cute and comical.

Hamsters can be fun if you get one that has been hand raised or at a young age. They can be mean and messy. They don't live long.

hamsters are cute but they are very messy. The bedding that you put in the cage gets everywhere and you have to clean it constantly. I had fun when i had mine but to be honest i was glad when it passed away.

with so much stuff for hamsters it's pretty easy to keep up with them. Just get a baby if u can, so that it gets used to you quicker, that way you won't have problems with it biting

.....firstly to get rid of your cat just because of your husband...........(doesn't gel with me)
I can imagine your mom giving you away, because your dad was allergic to baby girls..........................................................
all your husband needs to do is take allergy tablets..
I am highly allergic to cats, yet I live with five maine-coons in my duplex. I take allergy tabs every day. Your cat was first........................ It was in the end YOUR CHOICE to get rid of your cat!!!!!
For the animals sake, DO NOT GET any animals!!!!! Your husband might just DIE from them.............................
