When the tank is refilling and heating the water, there are thumps, bumps, pops and sorta sounds like a gurgle... reminds me of the sound of water about to boil on a stove. Does this mean it is going bad? I have released the pressure valve on top and the drain valve on the bottom..it hasn't changed the noises. I still have hot water.. but I'm not sure for how long.... it is a gas water heater. Any suggestions??/ or should I call the plumber??

there are deposits that have formed and are expanding and contracting, thus making popping noises. Maybe you could flush it, but I think it's hardened inside and may be time for a replacement.

You may have released the pressure from the bottom by opening the valve but, picture an inverted cone, that's what it probably looks like at the bottom of your tank.
Turn the tank off, open the bottom to drain it but turn the top water inlet off, wait until the tank is as empty as it's going to get. Leaving the bottom valve open open the top valve again to "flush" it. See if sand starts coming out, if it does keep this up. Off and on, until it's pretty clean then try closing the bottom and opening the top again, make sure it's open to the house, and the heater is on. See if that helps.
I do this twice a year, the first time, after ten years when we moved here, the well had a crack in it. The water heater had about three wheel barrows full of sand in it, we got little to no hot water and the people before us used it this way, thinking this was the way it was.
