I'm American, so I have to say it is exactly the same. Gas is lang for gasoline And I believe petrol is slang for petroleum in England.
If your asking about natural gas. You get for worse milage per gallon and per dollar (except for some former soviet republic in which natural gas is a lot cheaper than petrol) Natural gas is gas and therefore per gallon has less energy, because there is less carbons per pound than liquid hydrocarbons, like petrol. Natural gas are smaller molecules. This means there is less carbon bonds and therefor les energy per molecule. The last two statements are related. Natural gas is better in some ways, because it polute less.

Car on gas is less harmful for nature and has less hazards and pollution. Then it is better for yourself too .
