This is a question that I have just talked about with some of my family and friends..
I don't think anyone should get alimony Male/Female unless they are very wealthy and used to having the finer things in life or if for some reason the person is unable to work because of a physical problem(and being lazy doesn't count) I met a man a few months ago and he is about 80yrs. old..his wife of like 50 yrs. left him for another man and she was awarded alimony for the rest of her or his life unless she remarries..He is not wealthy..I wouldn't say he is poor but that is ridiculous..she is living with her boyfriend and the poor man has to give her money..Common sense tells you she will never remarry so he will haft to pay until the end!(CRAZY)
I have heard some people say that if a couple has kids the man/women should pay alimony..I don't agree. That is what child support is for!
I guess the law thinks if you get married that you basically take your spouse to raise like a child even if you divorce..
If it is awarded for a man/woman I think a year(max) is long enough for the X spouse to get their sh*t together and get a job or find another victim to support them!

Only if the marrage is a very old one like 3o+years. If she was a homemaker then he should pay alimony. This is something that is being phased out in my state. There is a thing now called 'spousal suport' but that is usually for just a few years so the woman can finish her education to get a decient job.
It is unusual to be granted lifetime alimony anymore.

If the husband put her in a position where she didnt work or had no realistic means to be able support herself financially she should be given alimony until she can reach the stage that she'll be self dependent.
Many men still expect their wives to stop working and give up their careers to raise the children so its only fair they be compensated.
Working woman shouldnt be entitled to alimony if they can support themselves.

This is a tough question because my parents are divorced so I'm kinda picky. BUT I think it depends on the cause of divorce.
If the man leaves the woman because SHE ran around, she gets nothing. And Vice - Versa.
BUT if the woman leaves the man because of abuse/infidelity, then she should get it all.
'There's more too it than that. Thats just an opinion.

if she has been a homemaker and was not guilty of adultry then she should be required to go to school or get a job and the alimony should stop when she is capable of supporting herself either has a degree or if she chooses not to get an education then no more then 6 months anyone should be able to find a job in that amount of time.

2 years only if she has if she has been a stay at home mom. Two years should be enough to prepare to get out into the workforce.
