Instead of asking "Who are you wearing"?. Did you ever asked, "Are your diamonds conflict-free".?

See, Blood Diamond. The movie may be fiction, but the stories happen everyday.

I know what you mean. I haven't seen the movie, but I plan to. There have been many human rights atrocities related to the procurement of diamonds from Africa. I have even heard that Apartheid was established as a mechanism to ensure the control of the diamond market remained in anglo hands...I haven't looked into that too much though, so I don't know if it is true. However, it also doesn't seem too far-fetched either.

Better yet, read Blood Diamonds the book by Gregory Campbell.

There is no 100% certain way to verify that diamonds are conflict-free; when you read that book, you will understand that companies have stocks of diamonds that were mined years upon years ago. Their origins are untraceable and documents are easily forged. The whole 'diamonds are forever' and 'diamonds are a girl's best friend' idea is publicized and popularized by the industry itself. The conflict has moved from Sierra Leone to Cote D'Ivoire since the writing of the book and the documentary (yes, there is a documentary with graphic scenes of people whose hands have been chopped off due to the conflicts), but it still exists.

Don't believe me? Just Google conflict diamonds or read the articles I've linked to and read the book.

you need to learn your history and your current diamond trade information before you go making inflammatory remarks based on a MOVIE.
