Why do people use transistor for switching while they could simply use a normal switch? and Why resistors are needed in transistor operation?

there are two types, metal oxide field effect transistor (MOSFET) and bipolar junction transistor (BJT). most digital application use MOSFET (the out put is either 1 or 0), while an analog application use BJT (such as the radio).

the most popular application of transistor is automatic switch. thus, you dont have to use your hand to control the switch. duh? if we are talking about transistor, we are not talking about a light switch, we talking about computer chip here. especially MOSFET. for example, your comp processor is made of a lots lots of transistorsssss. which is actually work as a switchesssss. that is why we did not use a normal switchesssss.

however, we can also use them in a cheap things such as, the normal light. but to think about it, its better to use the normal switch unless you want an automatic light.

the resistor can be any types of resistive/inductive/capacitive circuit which depends on the characteristic of the circuit that you want. for example, you can use a light sensing resistor to make the circuit characteristic change depending on the intensity of light. for example, most of the road lights using it.

If you mean by a normal switch a mechanical switch, then there is a limit as to how fast it can operate. Even very small reed relays can only switch at a few hundred Hz at most. Transistors can switch at MHz or even GHz frequencies.

Consider them a micro switch, meaning really small, consider this , the latest micro processors,aka duo core have transistors so small that 100 could fit into one human cell, if they had a normal sized switch ,our computors would be the size of a baseball field, and that would be a small one.the resistors are to drop the voltage/ heat to the transistor, as thier small size could not handle the true amperage of the circuit that they are switching
