Your engine will not idle smoothly if you have much of a leak. A large leak, will cause the engine to run rough, backfire, and die when you let off the gas to idle. Driving can cause a lean burn in the cylinders, causing damage to the pistons (melting), or burn the lip (edge) of the valves. You need to repair it if you are sure you have an intake leak.

It depends on where the leak is at and on what truck. If it's just on an air intake tube, then it varies on where you drive. If you drive off road a lot in the dust, then I would say serious. I know I wouldn't want all that dust and crap in my motor. If you just stick to the city. I wouldn't think it's as serious, but something that should be fixed soon. Because you are sucking in air that hasn't gone through a filter, so your basically sucking junk into your motor that the filter would have caught. Good luck I hope this helps. I hope you have an easy time fixing it too. Also consider that if you drive a newer vehicle with a mass air flow sensor, that they can easily damaged by stuff like that. dirt, oil from a K&N air filter, etc... can damage the wires inside easily. So consider that too. And if it gets really dirty it can affect your air fuel ratio and your truck will run like crap. Also if it's a manifold leak it should be fixed right away. You can replace the gasket yourself, but make sure you know the proper torque on the bolts, and use a torque wrench to get that right when you re-install the manifold. Just think about all that junk that could be being sucked in your motor as you drive. Again good luck.

if its an intake manifold leak, you'll see poor gas milage, and maybe a rough idle. if its a gasket you need, and pending the model of truck, it shouldn't cost more than $200 CDN for full repair. thats a very rough estimate.
