I agree that is was Marilyn Monroe's dress that is the most famous. However, I am not sure if it was in a movie, unless you are considering the movie about her life. Next to her is Lady Di's Wedding dress. It was also pretty popular.

The little black number worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's may be the most famous.... but the dress worn by Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct when she crosses her legs in the police interview will be the one that not a single man will be able to describe, identify the colour or make comment as to the fit etc.

I first thought of Hepburn's LBD myself when I read your question - but Monroe's white dress is also really famous. Btw gailyp77 is right, Liz Hurley's safety-pin dress has got to be the most famous one not worn in a movie

Marilyn Monroe's dress in " Diamond's Are A Girls Best Friend" musical number. I know Monica Lewinsky wasn't in a movie, but she made that little blue Gap dress pretty famous, and JLO made that green Versace number pretty famous also.

Marilyn Monroe's white halter dress from The Seven Year Itch, where the wind from the subway blows up her skirt.

Scarlett O'Hara's green dress made from her curtains in Gone With The Wind. In my opinion, at least.
