Stock shares represent ownership in the company. If a company has 1 million shares outstanding and you own 1 share, then you "own" 1/1,000,000 of the company. (Of course, you can't demand 1/1,000,000 of the assets.)

The price is determined by investor interest in the company and fluctuates from hour to hour, day to day. Over time, a trend will develop influencing investor decisions as to buying or selling the stock.

For a more detailed understanding of the way a stock moves (increase/decrease in price), go the the library and get some books on investing.
