Ok, I know this question has been asked before, but I want to see if any one can guess the true best invention. In my opinion, its the escalator. Think about it, it gets you to somewhere faster using the same energy, and if it breaks, its still stairs, so basically, its never out of service!

Fire. Think of who much we would have lost without it. Now if you DON'T call it an invention then that really opens things up. How about the Wheel? Where would the escalator be without it? The escalator basically uses the old rope and pulley type system and needs a wheel to turn it. So without the wheel we simply have a set of steps.

Ookami is partially correct. Writing allowed information to be conveyed to people in a permanent manner. But what allowed information to be transmitted to many people was the printing press. Before, copying by hand took a long time. Also alot of people could not read because text was not readily available. The printing press allowed ideas to be disseminated to a large population.

Although most people don't think of it as an invention, the most useful invention of all time would be written language. The ability to convey our thoughts in writing has allowed ideas to be spread across the world; our ideas themselves are able to be communicated more clearly due to our understanding of grammar and syntax. The written word allows us to record the passage of time and events so that we can learn from them later; it allows us to fabricate entire worlds of fanciful imagination; it creates a preservable record of our lives, thoughts, and actions. Most importantly, it allows ideas to become portable: whic allows people to learn from one another, develop new ideas, collaborate, and answer questions.
