So we figured the fish had fin rot, so we got some medicine at the pet store. We followed the directions, and then the next day two fish died. One more is alive still, but look like it is fighting to stay alive. The goldfish is at the top of the tank sucking in air. Does anyone know why? And what can we do to save it?

We changed the water yesterday and replaced the filter.

It could mean not enough oxygen or bad water like high ammonia or nitrite. If the tank is large enough with a filter suited for goldfish then the outflow of the filter should be enough to allow for gas exchange. Test your water to make sure you have no ammonia, no nitrite and nitrate around 20, that is how it should be in a cycled tank, if it isn't then you will have to do water changes to fix that. If you don't know about cycling then I suggest you read up on it.

Fish generally gulp air when there is not enough oxygen in the water.

Aeration can help if this is indeed the problem. For a goldfish a small corner filter and a small vibratory pump can put oxygen in the water and help clean it as a bonus. These are pretty cheap and you can get them anywhere they sell supplies for pet fish. If you have a pump already, make sure that the bubbles are coming up in the water and if not check to see if the hoses are connected or if the pump is working.

you may not be able to save it, but goldfish are air breathers so hes just breathing and that could mean the water in his tank is not good, you need to change the water fairly often if you dont have a tank with a pump and filter.

I believe you need to have some from of break in the water in order to oxygenate it. A filter or the like should do the fish well.

get an airstone and an airpump connected to the tank. Also do a water change. Their isn't enough oxygen in the water.

Usually fish breathing in the surface means bad water. you might have a high ammonia. try checking your parameters and getting some Melafix by APi-aquarium pharmaceuticals!
