I don't really know what is wrong, but I get the feeling its one of those simple problems to fix.

This is my first few months living away from my parents so I don't know how to do anything yet really.

The oven has stopped working, and the switch (to turn the oven on) usually glows red when turned on does not glow anymore. Also the microwave oven doesn't work when plugged into an outlet near the oven.

Is there something I can do myself to solve this problem, or should I contact my landlord to get an electrician over to fix it?

you should have a fuse box or circuit breaker in your house (probably circuit breaker) it will have numerous switches that connect to different areas of the house. Switch them off and then on and see what happens. Also, maybe in your bathroom you have a red button above your electrical socket, press that to reset things. good luck

Hi annie. The circuit feeding the cooker socket is dead. You have to find the Consumer Unit or Fusebox which serves your flat/house.There is no specific place this may be located but when you find it you will be able to see what each circuit is protected by -either MCB's (miniature circuit breakers) which throws a little switch down when a circuit is overloaded- this has to be switched back on manually. or a 'push in' fuse holder, Depending on the circuit each fuse holder will have a fuse wire of the correct rating. Before switching on the circuit breaker or pushing in the new fuse make sure the cooker socket is switched off as there may be a fault in something that was being used. As this is your first experience I would recommend the electrician fix it while you watch him

You are probably right it may be that the fuse/Residual Current Device has tripped. If the house has RCD's as opposed to fuses you will see a row of switches where the electricity enters your house. Normally they will all be "on" if one is "off" there is a fair chance that that is the one for the kitchen.

You really really have to bear in mind that it will have tripped off for a reason e.g. putting a knife in the toaster, the kettle has developed a fault, water in a socket anything like that. Think of anything like this that you have noticed before even considering flipping the switch.

If you flip it and you hear a pop and it turns off again- call landlord.

The proper health and safety answer to this is "call an electrician" btw

Call the landlord to send over an electrician to correct your situation. Watch what the electrician does so you may be able to handle a future situation. Better to learn from someone who knows than to experiment with things that could cause trouble and grief.

I would get a lamp that you know that works and try it in the outlet. If it does not work. I would let the landlord know you have a problem. If you had your own house you could check the circuit breakers or fuses. Let the landlord handle it.

Sure find the fuse box and check the fuses (if there are fuses you can look at them and see if they are "burned"). If there are no fuses, there should be a switch that you can reset by flipping it up. The fusebox may well be in a closed or a metal-doored box on or in a wall. There should be instructions in the box on what to do and hopefully the fuses are marked as to which room they correspond to.

firstly, the law in the UK changed so that any electrical work (apart from changing fuses/light bulbs) has to be done by a proper electrician and as you rent your place it is best to contact your landlord, as he may have an arrangement with a local person to do that work.

call an electrician, for one thing its against the law in many places for anyone but an electrician to work on that stuff due to the fact if you dont know what you are doing you will kill yourself yes the landlord is supposed to take care of it anyway, so dont take any chances.

Get your landlord to fix it. If it turns in to something big or you screw it up guess who will be pi**ed off. Be sides it's his job. You pay rent.

if it is a fuse, you can't fix it..you replace it ...check your circuit breaker box and if you see one that has tripped. reset it. if it keeps on tripping then you have to contact someone who can tell you why.....be safe
