Get a parakeet. They are small, easy to train, and aren't as hard to clean up as dogs.

Cats and dogs are great long-time pets. If you're looking for a shorter term pet, though, I have to recommend rats.
I was a freshman in college living in the dorms when my roommate got her rat (which quickly became our rat). Her name was Moksa, and while I was really skeptical at first (pets in dorms was very forbidden) Moksa really grew on me. She was the coolest thing. She'd sit on our hands and then scamper up our arms to sit on our shoulder while we played Mario Kart and smoked hookah. She never pooped on anyone and loved to climb all over people.
We loved her so much that we ended up getting her a little sister named Bodhi. Bodhi wasn't quite as cool 'cause she did poop on people, but they got along really well and were just generally awesome pets.
They are inexpensive and don't require a whole lot of upkeep and are a lot more affectionate than you would expect. Make sure to get females though. I've heard bad things about males.
Happy pet hunting!

Depends on the age of the person you are getting it for and how able they are to take care of it. Because I don't know all that though I would have to say a dog. They are easy to take care of, Loyal, and all it takes is a little love to make them ador you. Also it is best to get one as a puppy so they grow with you and are more attached + no bad habits to break but normal puppy phases.

Cats are terrific pets. If you get one that is smart enough, they will come when they are called, fetch and talk to you. Also, they are independent enough to be left alone for hours at a time, but they are often very personable and enjoy company.
Best of luck with your selection!

Betta fish.
Easy maintenance.
Low cost.
No bubbly tank, just a fish bowl.
They live a long time and you can really find some beauties.

I like Bettas - good personalities (for a fish) easy to care for, hard to kill, take little space, good conversation starters, cheap to keep, etc.
