When I first encountered Northstar (Jean-Paul Beaubier) I was impressed that Marvel had been able to keep up with the times. Public opinion changed considerably since his first introduction in Uncanny X-Men #120 (April 1979). And it was only a lot later when eventually in Alpha Flight #106(1992), his sexuality became less subtle, with Northstar saying "I am gay."

In regards to Hulkling (Teddy Altman) and Wiccan (Billy Kaplan) (Young Avengers #1, April, 2005). I was a little shocked for some reason to hear these two characters were homosexual.

(Allan Heinberg confirmed this speculation, stating his intent was to reveal the relationship in issue #12).

I don't know if I was surprised because I didn't see this coming, but for some reasons I do have reservations. It could be that I am not a big fan of sexual romantic relationships in Marvel universe, homosexual or heterosexual. And this relationship is a little bit more explicit.

How does everyone else feel? NO GAY BASHING!

I think its nice to see some diversity introduced into comics, especially with all the hype going around. If publishers decide that its appropriate to release, then I say full steam ahead! Its a great way to keep up with society today, and it gives us of that community a hero to look up to.

Didn't Northstar die?

Anyway, I read the Young Avengers And Runaways Civil War tie in's, and I didn't even notice any gay behavior. If I hadn't just read this, I wouldn't have known that Hulkling and Wiccan were gay. I really don't see Marvel playing something like this up. They have some romance, but it never gets sexual. Hardly even a kiss.

I don't really like the Young Avengers, so it doesn't really matter to me. A gay love story would be the nail in the coffin of Young Avengers.

I am not opposed to it fundamentally, we need to be a more accepting and tolerant culture and if this helps foster understanding then I am all for it.

Having said that, I also see comics as a place to escape the duldrums of our daily lives. Being a person that watches the news daily and engages in controversial discussions all the time, I'm not sure I want to be encountering this kind of drama in the Marvel Universe. I understand that writers are striving for verisimilitude, and that sometimes reality creeps into story arcs of the most fantastical titles (didn't the Beyonder engage in social comentary on issues like the homeless in Secret Wars II?) and I accept that, but I wouldn't want to be hit over the head with the issue over and over; even though the realistic scenario would be constant drama, I wouldn't continue to read such a title.

northstar was a good move.

Especially since he was canadian- so we have something else to **** on canada about.

Hulkling and Wiccan, like the rest of the young avengers are just plain crappy characters. I never liked any of them and I think the buzz about them bieng gay is the only thing that kept that peice of **** book alive.

I seriously hope they kill them all off during the civil war.

I think vikki montessi from the darkhold was also a good move. If they are going to do homosexuality it should be in the form of hot lesbians instead. Lesbians are more acceptable in society and since a majority of comic readers are men, the idea of two hotties kissing or going at it has more potential to boost sales.

I think that comics has always been mostly a reflection of society. This is especially apparent in the 70's when Marvel had a lot of references to Vietnam.

To ask what a person's opinion is of homosexuality in comics is a polite way of asking if someone approves of homosexuality. I personally couldn't care less either way,

With regards to the question...I think that the general public has its' own ideas of what is acceptable behavior and what is not but from all the censoring of what a typical marriage should be and all I think that the populous would win here compared to those that do not care either way..as an example look at the book with the 2 penguins(fathers) that adopt a child penguin and become a family this book generated alot of buzz ...but some of the general concensus is making that change too to be accepting of the latter as well...look at ALL MY CHILDREN ...Bianca....

Since it is part of life then it shouldn't be a problem in a comic book AS LONG AS it is done tastefully. Sexual practices don't really have a place in comic books aimed at kids. Adults, fine. For kids, crushes or meaningful friendships are alright.
