"Andy Griffith Not Amused by Candidate Who Took His Name

NEW YORK It seemed like just a lark, a funny Election Day story in the press that would soon fade. Did you hear the one about the fella running for sheriff in Wisconsin who changed his name to Andy Griffith -- trying to bring a little Mayberry to Grant County -- and still lost. Ha.

Now it turns out the star of "The Andy Griffith Show" -- still very much alive at age 80 -- isn't laughing. He is suing the 42-year-old Wisconsin man formerly known as Will Fenrick, asking for damages and court fees, and demanding that he publish an apology in all the local papers.

The suit alleges Fenrick, a local music store owner, violated trademark and copyright laws when he legally changed his name to Andrew Jackson Griffith.

The lawsuit says the former Fenrick changed his name for the "sole purpose of taking advantage of Griffith's notoriety in an attempt to gain votes." It asks the court to order him to go back to his original name.

Andy Griffith's lawsuit also asks him to publish disclaimers and an apology in Grant County newspapers, saying he has no association with the actor, who now lives in North Carolina.

Last month, Fenrick told the media, "I'm doing this so people will pay attention to this race. And I think if they do pay attention, then they will vote for me."

He denounced local speed traps: "They never did that in Mayberry! See, that's the thing about Andy Griffith. He was honest and straightforward and people respected him for that."

Fenrick got over 1,200 votes running as an independent. The winner gained over 8,000.

Now he describes the suit as "absurd" and said he does not believe the public is "so brain dead" that they might actually believe that he is the famous actor. "For such an American icon, it's a pretty un-American thing to do to me," said Fenrick."

Why don't you ask him? Run his name in Zabasearch. I don't know what state he is living in, but I'm sure he can tell you his status himself.
