It is Biblical, Jesus refers to returning to fasting after he leaves this earth. I am not sure which passage. the Catholics watered it down to fish Fridays instead of fasting twice a week and all of lent, like the early Christians used to do, and the Orthodox still do.

The rule was against eating meat on Friday, so naturally they ate fish. It originally was an economic thing. This pope made up the rule to help the fishing industry. (no kidding)

Of interest was at Notre Dame football games there was a sign over the hot dog stands that said that Catholics had a special dispensation from the Pope and could buy and consume a hot dog on Friday without sinning.

Not eating fish on Fridays, year round, was once an act of penance observed universally. Unfortunately, it didn't fit every culture -- some are virtually vegetarian or perhaps meat is so expensive that not eating meat on Fridays has no meaning. And of course, the act would have no meaning if one was a vegetarian.

Since Vatican II, we are called to choose for ourselves, individually, an act of penance. So, the obligation to perform a penitential act every Friday, year round, remains though no specific act is determined. You'd be surprised how few Catholics are aware of this prescription.

Of course, during Lent, no meat is eaten on Ash Wednesday or on Fridays. This allows the universal Church to observe a universal act of penance during the holy season of Lent.

This came from Jesus feeding the multitude with the fish and bread. Now Cathilics like fish and chips. As you know, the Catholics were started after Christ dies. So, Christ is out of the picture. This whole thing was due to the fish being on the bed. When this happened, Peter said, I sure would like to have a fish.: Doubting Thomas said, "I doubt you will be eating fish." It took Shakesphere to solve the problem and tell the Catholics they are not rightous. They need to go hungry. Shakesphere called this fasting.

The Catholic Church follows the Biblical practice of Jesus Christ and the Jews in setting aside days where the entire Church fasts and prays as one in a attitude of constant renewal.

Catholics fast by eating fewer and smaller meals and by not eating meat. Fish is frequently substituted as a source of protein

Fridays were chosen because Jesus died for us on Good Friday.

Fasting is one of the three methods of interior penance along with prayer and almsgiving.

With love in Christ.

When they profaned the Sabbath; when their fish came to them on their Sabbath day appearing on the surface of the water, but on the day when they did not keep the Sabbath, they came not to them. Thus did We try them because they were rebellious.
