U are going to meet a LOT of bad people and do a lot of stupid things. Then you are going to be addicted and then you will die. The end.

If you do drugs, ANY drugs, you will find yourself selectively choosing those you hang out with so that they won't interfere with your drug use. Clean friends will fall down your "list" as you will not want them interfering with something that brings you pleasure. You may even lose them. Family may still be important, unless you become a true addict, in which case they too will only get in the way of your pleasure. If you became an addict all things would move down the priority list making room for your drug of choice at the top. This is not a conscious decision, this just happens. Some people start to lie when they never lied before, some people start to steal although they have never been a theif. Some do neither, but become extremely introverted and alone. It depends on the drug and the person. Some people lead "normal" lives despite their drug use, but usually this is temporary and the effects catch up with them. Usually drug use will change your social life drastically, the things you do and the people you do them with will not be the same as before you began. This is usually a bad thing. As with anything, even water, drugs don't have to ruin your life if done with sense and moderation, but the problem is, the majority of people don't have this when it comes to things that alter their brain chemistry and thinking patterns.

personal theory. this is for me a issue I could discuss at long lengths. First and foremost I assure you that I am not endorsing the abuse of drugs. There are four industries that create and control all the money in the world. These are religion, government, sex and drugs. I believe that we as a society are focusing on the symptom not the problem. The problem: The pedophile the rapist the sexual predator. The symptom: Drug abuse. Until our society focus's on the problem the social affects caused by drug abuse will never be eliminated and our "WAR ON DRUGS" will continue to be futile.Everything is always about money and I am willing to bet that more money is generated from 10lbs of child pornography than 10lbs of marijauna or any other drug. I'm also willing to bet that the consequences for drug use or abuse are much higher than the consequences a pedophile would ever face.I will give you an example. Recently in our valley the feds, locals bust a major drug ring. Close to 40 people were involved. This was front page news. On page A8 the archdiocese settles sex-abuse cases for 60 million dollars. Close to700 individuals were affected by the 22 priests involved. An independent judge (whoever that is) will determine as to whether those files and documents will be released to the victims. 40mil will come from the archdiocese 20 million from religious orders and the rest from independent insurance coverage. thankfully according to Ray Boucher the lead plaintiffs attorney 45 very injured people will have a chance to begin to heal particulary at this time of year. The big concern is the 700 or 800 victims who are out there who still have claims pending. Just out of this one example I wonder how many of those victims fell victim to the use or abuse of drugs or alcohol. Never does anyone totally heal from such abuse. Just as there were victims in this case there were victims in this drug ring. Will their victims be compensated.? No for we as a society don't see the user/abuser as a victim there the criminal. Will the persons that were arrested have an opportunity to have there cases reviewed by an independent judge.. Can persons who are involved in the drug industry have insurance to cover there victims. More than likely the same religous organization taught most of these individuals there morals and values. I wonder how much money was generated by the child pornography that was created by this one incident. If it weren't for drugs governments could feed their people more people would be in church there would be no sexual perversions there would be know problems and our world would be at PEACE what a concept. So maybe the question should be what are the social affects of the sexual predator the rapist the pedophile?

Happy, Hungry Sleepy. - Katt Williams :)

It really depends what types of drugs we're talking of. Weed, weed isn't really a "drug" legally it is , but realistically common sense proves it's not, it's just a plant. No one has ever died from pot.

Crack makes you super nervous and you can't eat, it also defects your nervous system and heart, same goes with Heroine.

Cocaine is a wonderful drug though, I gotta say :) very nice.

There are common symptoms for most drugs but most of the time people have their own effects. Some people don't even become addicted believe it or not so saying that Just 1 hit and your hooked is bullshit.

You should be more specific with what your asking, what kind of drug exactly?

There is a very wide range of effects depending on the type of drugs used, the amount of drugs used and the length of time used.

I used to use so I have some experience. Clean for 7 years though.

A few effects to get you going would be paranoia, withdrawal, deceit, shame, loss of relationships.
Drugs can easily affect your job or schooling.

Bottom line - don't even go down that road. I was blessed to escape, but I've known some who have not.

Drug abuse affects your family...

Those who you love the most, will put up with about everything from a drug dependent person, until its the last "straw" that is broken, then they will wash thier hands of them. But, until then, they will make excuses after excuses of why they are dependent. They will put up with abuse and destruction of property, marital problems and it goes on and on, until one day, they just walk out because they cant take it anymore...

On Society...

The drug dependent person causes property damage, and often causes injury or death to others! Drunks and druggies who drive will cause the greater harm to others...

Then, there is the burden of Hospitilization...
They use up a lot of space in wards for detox both from drugs and alcohol. They take up valuable time, as Doctors can be best utilized by those patients that are in serious need, instead of dependent on drugs...

I feel sorry for those who abuse alcohol and drugs...I know, I've been there myself!

I wish you well..

Jesse

The quality of answers on these kinds of questions here is poor overall.

If you want a good overall review of the subject, the best one ever written was the Consumers Union Report on Licit and Illicit Drugs at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/studies/cu/cumenu.htm

It is safe to say that, if you haven't read this book then you simply don't know the subject. I would wager that not one of the other people who has offered an answer has read it.

Well ... First of all drug abuse like any serious illness has a negative stigma in society. People look down on you as a pathetic loser for needing to console themselves by using a substance. Employers look at you as someone incapable of doing your job because your addiction will get in the way of your ability to function properly while working. Your friends will withdraw from you for fear of you bringing them down with you. Your parents will withdraw not wanting to support your habit. Someone with a serious enough addiction will suffer a lifetime of being out casted. It's worse when they are in recovery or aren't making a legitimate effort to better themselves. It's wrong but thats what happens when you become dependent on something, you become dependent on people (unless you become a recluse to hide it) and when you become dependent on people they tend to withdraw.

Socially as a society, or for the individual abuser?
It's a problem.
Individually it will tear up the person and family involved, it has a ripple effect- from the individual to the whole economy.

Drug are social, so they are a componet to society, in that they help people bond & find there own personal truth, unless they choose to let the group/world make up there beliefs. then they get lost in the experience & can't seperate the experience. Truth is realitive to the experiencer. We are all experiencing our truth from our own perspective & it grows as we grow, & drugs help us experience different states of concienciuosness. Sorry if my spelling is bad.

social effects...
welll socially you will isolate yourself frmo people
and from the people close to you. like family.
you may meet dangerous people
but its the risk your willing to take when you start taking drugs
you put yourself in an emotionaly dreadful position
an addiction that will take so much to get over
and a life will get ruined, as well as the lives of people close to you
