Some will say yes and others no but I find Downy to be a better product and it doesn't have the 'funny' lanolin smell of an old sheep. It controls static cling and I use less than I would of the budget brand and therefore works out to be almost as cost effective. It also makes the towels softer than any of the cheap ones I've tried.

I've found that with most things, the generic brand are just as good. It all comes down to what you want most from your fabric softener...softness or smell. Then try out a couple and see what you like best. The generic form of Downy sold a Walmart stores is so close most people never notice the difference

They work as far as removing the static, but the smell doesn't last at all. You have to use about 5 generics compared to 1 or 2 better brand fabric softner sheets.
As far as the liquid the work the same but the non generic ones usually smell better.

I usually buy the name brand of cereal for some reason. I'm not completely opposed to generic cereals, just have never bought them : p
