I have had one female hamster and two males. The female was a Syrian and she was very sweet and tame. My two boys were sweet too, but hard to catch and get our of their cages. I have heard that males are better because females are more territorial. Out of my 3 hamsters, I was only bitten once, and it didn't even come close to drawing blood. Winter whites don't normally change colors in captivity due to getting uses to the warm house temperatures which is nowhere near the temperature where they live in the wild in winter. They change their color to blend in better to the snow during the colder months. I recommend a glass tank and not a wire cage because my Syrian's foot somehow got stuck somewhere in the bars and she leg had to be amputated, and she died short after due to the stress, I believe. Poor thing. Don't let your hamster go through that.

Food keeps them warm so don't give him to much food, he next option after food wood be to have sex to warm himself up before he goes to bed.

Put another woman in it. Or soak it in water and throw in a plugged-toaster. That will make them very active, at least for a little while.
