You can't solve hiccups in a newborn. They are caused by a build up of excess oxygen in the lungs and blood. That's why, as an adult, you can hold your breath or drink a lot of water to get rid of them. As an adult, if you get too relaxed, or drink too much alcohol, you take deeper breaths to conserve oxygen, then you get the hiccups. By holding your breath, or drinking water, or being scared "cures" them. All of these things make you hold your breath, causing the Carbon Dioxide to build up, therefore making the acidity in your blood to go down. (When you get sacred, you suck in a relaly big breath, which lowers the pH of your blood, thereby raising the acidity.) I know this is pretty technical, but let me assure you, scaring your infant will NOT cure her! Her lungs are immature because she is new to breathing air, and her body has just not learned to balance her blood pH yet, it wont hurt her, she probaly is responding to your anxiety if she seems upset by them. LOL Rest easy new mommy, she is perfectly normal!

Our babies were in the NICU (neoantal intensive care unit) and the NICU nurses would try to get them to use a pacifier when they had the hiccups -- they explained to me that the activity of sucking will usually stop the hiccups.

Later on, we too used Gripe Water. We used the "Baby Bliss" brand, which I've seen in some baby stores (BuyBuyBaby comes to mind) and is also available online. I've never seen it in my corner drug store, but it's the brand I heard most praised, so that's what I went with. I would still check with your doctor about it. I asked the pediatrician and neonatologist and while they weren't thrilled they weren't opposed -- their only concern, actually, was that the product isn't made with sterilized water, so in that sense it's only as good as the water it's made with (and for my preemie babies that was a concern). Anyway, our babies got the hiccups a LOT and the gripe water worked virtually every time, and worked quickly. I recommend it.

Oh dont you hate that! and I know it has to aggrivate them....I actually use a product that is called Gripe Water...it is located in the baby isle. The one place I have found here that carries it is Krogers..Here is a link of the product that I purchase. http://www.wellements.com/gripewater.asp

I use it for gas pains and he also has acid reflux and we just grew out of the wonderful colic stage! Bless his heart! Now we are into teething and its still helping him out....We have actually used this from the time he was a week old. You may want to check with your doctor on this product but its one I wont be without.

For the time being you can give him/her a little bit just a few drops of water along with breastmilk/formula.

This works about half the time for mine- halfway between the bottom of the sternum and the belly button take 2 fingers and gently rub in a circular motion.
Do not use alot of pressure! My oldest even had hiccups in utero!

a bit of sugar on the back of the tounge helps adults, I used a bit of sugar water for my babes. Not perfect but calming. Drinking milk helps too.

Slightly warm, weak peppermint tea worked on colic. It may help with hiccups too.

i know this would be a nasty thing.. but it is effective..

get a piece of paper (just a small piece, not bigger than the tip of your pinky) then wet it with a bit of saliva... then place it on the baby's forhead.. try it, theres no harm in trying..
