But for the most part it does favor the wealthy. They can go to the school of thier choice, they have home computers to help with home work, the schools in rich neighborhoods have more computers in the class rooms. Be ready to have comebacks for these statements.♣

One example could be that with scholarship programs like the National Merit Scholarship Program (winners chosen by PSAT scores), which is based more on learning potential than most subject based tests, poor students can earn college scholarships. Basically, if you score within the top 2% nationally of the NMSQT/PSAT you become a national merit commended scholar. This generally means a hefty scholarship at the university of your choice. If you score within the top 1%, you are almost guaranteed a full ride and usually a stipend for living expenses. Because the test is based on vocabulary, reading comprehension, and basic math, it really tests intelligence more than anything else, so it (mostly) doesn't favor the wealthy. With a college education, poor students will then be able to compete with the wealthy students in the business world and raise their own socio-economic status. Within three generations of such successes, a family could rise from poverty to extreme wealth.
Without education, there is almost no possibility for social mobility on this level.

Of course the system tends to favor the wealthy, but a truly intelligent and hard working young person can take advantage of scholarship opportunities like this and raise their own financial status over the course of a lifetime much more than could ever be imagined without such opportunities. Without the educational system, wealthy families would be guarenteed control of just about everything forever. With education, people who are already wealthy have to compete to hold on to their wealth.

There is nothing that wouldn't favor a wealthy student. Perhaps a morning breakfast that some poor kid gets when he goes to class, but then again does the rich kid want to be poor to eat a peanut butter sandwich? Wealthy kids can get scholarships, actually many of them do because they may be the top of the class (because of they're financial status, far more help is given, they live in safer communities, have everything at the tip of their fingers, where a lower class person wouldn't).

Why would wealthy people care about education in our country? They can afford to send their kids to private/Catholic schools and universities, or even to home-school their children. Most people cannot--especially the non-wealthy.
