self built, i would buy a core 2 duo e6600 300$ motherboard 100$
1 gig ram 100, video card 150, powersupply 50$ case 100, and flat screen monitor 200, www.newegg.com pay someone 100$ to assemble and a comp for 1k if u can't assemble it yourself...

I have a MacBook now but before that I had an HP and was really happy with it.
Macs are fun but I'm not sure they're worth the money when you can get a nice HP for less.
PS I've had bad experiences with Dells

my fav is the PC because it has more programs and is more well known
