Go to a Hardware store or Home Depot get the proper size brush for the inside flue of your chimney. Then make sure the fire is out in the Stove. Climb up on the roof, push the brush with the pole attached push the brush down to the bottom of the chimney and than pull it back out. Now go into the basement and open the clean out door of your chimney and clean out the ashes--Hint* after cleaning out the clean out door get a small steel coffee can and half fill it with amonia and place it into the base of the chimney this will reduce to amount of ashes tha build up on the inside of your chimney.... Be safe up on your roof

There is a special Broom designed for this job. One must run it down the chimney Never Up. Some of the newer type chimneys are pipe made and pulling the brush/broom upward will pull the pipes apart.
Most Profesionals (chimney swipes) Will cover the front of your fireplace with a canvas sheeting and vacume the fireplace as its being done.
Doing this yourself one should also wear a reporator.

Oh, simply rub it with a long stemmed wet map so that you will not inhale the dust.
