I often use the Internet for finding 'codes of practice' or 'guidelines' for my work as an Engineer. Obviously the BS standards are copyrighted and require payment, but many technical specifications and the like are available free of charge.
Only yesterday I found a page replete with 'guidelines' from a government building department. And recently browsed through many carpentry, steelwork and welding manuals.
My advice is to look for pdf files, and do a google search.

Unlike you I prefer books, and my recent acquisition of a 335 page pdf file on steelwork leaves me in a printing quandary.
Having already printed out 5 manuals averaging 30 pages each.

Try a search on e-bay, I got one for an alfa just downloaded it in pdf and burned to cd. Costs less than a book and if you need to print anything you just pick the relevant pages.
