Preston Tucker..I know he designed a household one in 1948, but I'm not sure if he got the pattent or sold it for his legal costs.

I'm not sure about the first patent, but
"The first known artificial refrigeration was demonstrated by William Cullen at the University of Glasgow in the mid 1700s"
